Arts and Philosophy

Dean: Prof. Andrea Canova

At Università Cattolica, history, philosophy, classical and modern literature, archaeology and history of art are not limited to the study of the past, but hand over to the present and future the great humanistic tradition, which flows into the Faculty of Arts and Philosophy and has its roots in the system of university studies of the Middle Ages, from which European culture was born. In line with its own identity, alongside its commitment to the solid and rigorous training of future researchers and teachers, the Faculty combines this tradition with new knowledge: new cultural results are born from their encounter, with interesting results also for professional opportunities.

Our faculty is the result of the decantation of a very long tradition

In line with its identity, the Faculty today accepts the new challenges of knowledge in order to put to good use in the contemporary era the values of the humanistic tradition and the consolidated critical instrumentation; adapting to the provisions of the restructuring of undergraduate degree programmes (three years) and graduate degree programmes (two years), it has activated the courses of seven degrees, offered either at the Milan or Brescia campuses or at both campuses or in collaboration with other Faculties (interfaculty courses).

The Faculty of Arts and Philosophy has in fact activated, also in collaboration with other Faculties of our University, graduate degrees that will offer graduates of the first three years - moreover already professionalizing by nature - the opportunity to complete their training in order to higher-level tasks in the sectors of civil life. In line with its identity, alongside its commitment to the solid and rigorous training of future researchers and teachers, the Faculty combines its tradition with new knowledge: new cultural results are born from their encounter, with interesting results also for professional opportunities.

Sectors such as publishing and the promotion of cultural heritage demonstrate, for example, how humanities and new frontiers of technology and communication are no longer distant and parallel worlds. To prepare people who are also able to handle challenges of this magnitude, there is a need for broad and solid training, a broad culture and a historical perspective.

The Faculty's range of offerings covers literary sciences (classical and modern), philosophical, historical, artistic and archaeological, communication, cultural heritage and performing arts (DAMS of Brescia), content manager, tourism, and in particular cultural tourism.

I believe that the contemporary university, while it has the duty to collaborate for the progress of the sciences and to follow the methodology required by each of them, must never put in second place what requires the recognition of its primacy, that is, man, the human person, the world of spirituality

Father Agostino Gemelli, Founder of Università Cattolica
