Objectives

The following competences, knowledge and skills are specific educational objectives, qualifying the graduate degree programme:

  • in-depth knowledge of the interdependencies between real and financial markets in modern economic systems, which are increasingly globalized;
  • in-depth knowledge of the ways in which public intervention is articulated in modern market economies;
  • ability to link the reality of economic problems with their social dimension;
  • ability to understand the dynamics and determinants of the evolution of growth in modern industrial and post-industrial economies.

The Graduate Degree programme in Economics aims to train economists with a solid preparation according to the highest European and international standards, mainly through the completion of the preparation acquired in the degrees of the classes in Economics.
This training objective is also pursued through a coordinated set of approaches such as:

  1. the deepening of the core of economic theory and quantitative analysis techniques;
  2. the development of skills and interpretative skills in fields of investigation that show the application possibilities of the tools acquired;
  3. attention to the historical and institutional dimension of economic systems;
  4. the development of the ability to apply quantitative methodologies and techniques for the solution of economic and social problems.

Competency Profiles

As part of the elective training activities, the Faculty has identified combinations of courses that allow the acquisition of knowledge related to the following skill profiles: Economics (entirely offered in English), Finance and International Markets, Economics and Public Sector Policies, Enterprise, Work and Innovation.

The curriculum is entirely taught in English and represents the University's flagship programme in Economics. The programme is equivalent to a two-year Master of Science in Economics. It provides students with a solid training in Economics emphasizing rigorous analytical thinking and advanced quantitative methods. Faculty members are internationally recognized economists. Our aim is to train economists suited both for academic and non-academic careers.
During the first year, students will study the foundations of economics and quantitative analysis, whereas the second year is devoted to field courses that will expose them to recent developments at the frontier of economic research in a variety of topics. At the end of the second year students will work on their final dissertation.
Besides taught courses, the curriculum also offers an internship programme with either economic research institutions (mostly located in the Milan area) or within the University's Department of Economics and Finance, where students are offered the opportunity of working as applied economists on real world economic issues, as well as meeting prospective employers. The skills acquired through the Economics programme prepare students to pursue their careers both in academia through further education at the PhD level as well as in the labour market as applied economists in firms, banks and institutions.
The programme is now at its tenth edition and so far it has performed very well in terms of placement in the labour market (World Bank, Bank of Italy, Eurizone, Deloitte, Oxford Policy Management, Intesa San Paolo, Chatham House) and in the academia (some of our students are completing or have completed their PhDs at Universitat Pompeu Fabra Barcelona, University of Nottingham, Scuola Superiore Sant'Anna, Boston College, University of Southern California, DIW Berlin and at Cattolica itself, and include winners of prestigious scholarships granted by the Bank of Italy).

The profile aims to provide students with scientific and professional skills (both theoretical and theoretical)
that you apply) aimed at a twofold objective:

  • examine how a modern market economy works ;
  • analyse the forms and characteristics of public intervention in modern economic systems, discussing its reasons, tools and constraints.

It provides the professional skills required in regional, national and international institutions (European Union, OECD, World Bank, International Monetary Fund) public and private, in control and regulatory authorities and in the research offices of financial institutions and large companies. This pathway can also represent a solid starting point towards scientific research in the fields of economics, public economics, economic policy and welfare.

This profile aims to train professionals who intend to operate in the economic, financial, monetary and international fields. It provides a complete and in-depth economic and technical training in view of employment as economists and/or professional figures dedicated directly or indirectly to portfolio management in domestic and international financial markets, in the management of companies with an international outreach and in international organizations (European Union, OECD, International Monetary Fund). It also provides a solid basis for further study and research activities in the field of international,  monetary and financial economics.

The profile will allow the student:

  • to analyse the ways in which firms interact on the markets, the mechanisms of development of productive sectors and the relationship between the political structure and the market;
  • to acquire the necessary skills to operate in markets characterized by a strong presence and rapid diffusion of new technologies, providing suitable tools for analyzing the innovative processes of production and marketing of goods;
  • to prepare human resources capable of transferring general knowledge and specific skills in the field of personnel organization, in the design of careers and incentives and in the evaluation of business performance.

The profile therefore aims to train experts able to perform a variety of functions in companies, international organizations, regulatory authorities, with the tasks of business economist, expert in human resource management and incentive systems.
