  • distribution and storage, particularly on the Web, of linguistic (meta)data, also in the form of linguistic resources, such as text corpora, dictionaries and lexicons;
  • analysis and automatic computational processing of linguistic (meta)data in order to extract information from empirical collections locally or from the Web, also through the modeling of knowledge represented linguistically through ontologies usually adopted in the Semantic Web for the formal representation of knowledge.

This job profile can be associated with the following roles: computational linguist; digital knowledge manager; digital publishing expert; expert in digital libraries.
The specific functions of the figure of the expert in automatic processing of linguistic (meta)data include:

  • the supervision of the entire life cycle of linguistic (meta)data, also in collaboration with software developers: production, analysis, distribution and storage;
  • the use and development of methods and tools for modelling linguistically mediated knowledge in large data masses (Big Data in the Humanities), in order to create, identify and manage networks of relationships between different types of digital objects, also and particularly in the context of the Semantic Web;
  • the management of the knowledge conveyed by the linguistic documentation produced by the Information Technology sectors of organisations, societies, companies, organisms and institutions, in order to analyze the content of linguistic (meta)data, particularly at the semantic level, to extract information from documents and model their intrinsic knowledge in an effective way.

Competencies associated with the function

  • advanced skills in formalisation of natural language data for computational processing purposes;
  • advanced skills in the design, development and use of automatic language processing methods and tools;
  • advanced skills in computational analysis of collections of linguistic (meta)data on digital media;
  • advanced skills in management (production, distribution, access, conservation) of language resources, both in the public and private sectors;
  • advanced skills in the use, design and development of ontologies for the Semantic Web, in order to formally represent and extract the knowledge conveyed by linguistic data distributed and/or owned by both public and private bodies, companies, organizations and institutions.

Career opportunities

  • Companies, societies, institutions, bodies and organizations directly or indirectly related to the extraction and analysis of linguistically mediated information available on digital media and, in particular, distributed on the Web; companies and societies operating in the digital publishing sector;
  • institutions, bodies and organisations active in the field of cultural heritage enhancement; companies, societies, institutions, bodies and organisations in need of information management systems; professional firms that need to manipulate linguistic data collections in digital format, such as legal and notary firms, insurance firms and opinion polling firms.

This figure has the function of supervising processes that require the planning, production and/or analysis of distributed content available via the Web, in particular related to the Humanities sector.
The main distinctive skills of this figure concern the ability to create and analyze data, both textual and multimedia, interconnected through ontologies already available, or extended as needed, for the Semantic Web.
These skills allow this figure to be able to apply and develop methods, techniques and tools to extract information from the Web, transforming it into structured knowledge.
This professional profile can be associated with the following roles: Web Project Manager; Web Content Expert; Web-Distributed Content Analyst; Social Network Analyst; Open and Big Data Expert.
Specific functions of the Web Content Planning, Production, and Analysis Expert include:

  • the planning and coordination of projects aimed at the creation of content for the Web, through the resolution of both issues related to the distribution of content and aspects related to digital communication;
  • the planning and implementation of environments on the Web, in particular those intended to host collections of linguistic (meta)data of the cultural area, also in the form of infrastructures of distributed content on the Web;
  • the application and development of methods, techniques and tools to transform the information provided in the form of linguistic data distributed on the Web into structured knowledge for the purpose of semantic investigation (Semantic Web).

Competencies associated with the function

  • advanced skills in the planning and coordination of projects aimed at the production, distribution and analysis of content for the Web, with particular attention to linguistic content in the humanities and cultural areas both in the private and public sectors;
  • advanced skills in the design and evaluation of the degree of usability of Web-based tools and interfaces, with particular reference to linguistic aspects in human-computer interaction;
  • advanced skills in the enhancement of knowledge owned and/or used by companies, societies, institutions, bodies and organizations through methods and tools for the formal representation and organization of content in terms of standard ontologies in order to automatically extract structured knowledge from the Web;
