University Glossary

A collection of common university terms

It is the enrolment in the first year of university. With it, you will receive a matriculation number that is necessary to register for exams and use the University's services. Hence the equivalent use of "freshman" to indicate a first-year student

They are groupings of university courses of the same level that share certain educational objectives and issue titles with the same legal value. All degrees that belong to a class have the same legal value


It measures the amount of learning work required. Each exam is associated with a number of ECTS, which estimates its commitment; 1 CFU is equal to 25 hours of work, personal study or attendance at laboratories

These are the majority of degree programs.
They have a duration of 3 years (also called first level), at the end of which the title of doctor is obtained.
Once the degree has been obtained, it is possible to continue with the two-year master's degree.

These are degree courses that have a duration of 5 years (Law and Primary Education Sciences) or 6 years (Medicine and Surgery, Dentistry and Dental Prosthetics). At the end of the course, the title of Doctor of Teacher is obtained

It is the set of courses, divided for each year of the course, that the student must attend, taking the relevant exams, in order to obtain the degree

Each course consists of a part of lessons, at the end of which an exam is taken, includes a certain number of ECTS equal for all and a grade (expressed in thirtieths) that varies according to the level of preparation

They take place from September/October to May. They can be free or compulsory and end with the exam

Annual: between 8 and 12 ECTS (CFU). Classes last from October to May and the exam can be taken in the summer section (from June)
Semesters: courses with the number of hours and period equivalent to half of the annual course

Some degree programmes include a compulsory internship or internship at institutions or companies to be carried out during the last year. There is the possibility of carrying out internships in Italy and abroad outside the curricular path

These are integrative activities based on the active involvement of the student, in which topics covered during the courses are explored in depth

Written work of a project or research in general on a topic related to a course in one's study plan, carried out under the guidance of a lecturer (supervisor). To obtain the degree, the paper is discussed in front of a commission
