Foreign languages, literatures and cultures

The specific educational objectives of the Graduate Degree Programme in Foreign Languages, Literatures and Cultures (which pertains to class LM-37 Modern European and American Languages and Literatures), are the acquisition of advanced skills in at least one of the European and American languages and civilizations, as well as in-depth knowledge of the literature and cultural heritage of the modern European and American civilizations of which the languages studied are an expression. Also part of the specific objectives of LM-37 is the acquisition of theoretical and applicative tools for the comprehension and interpretation of multilingual, literary and sectoral texts; for the translation of literary, non-fiction and technical texts and the linguistic-stylistic revision of translation renderings; for the development of terminology products; for language teaching; for the mature and aware management of the techniques of writing both written and multimedia texts. The normal duration of the graduate degree programme is an additional two years after graduation.

The programmes offered in LM-37 therefore allow the acquisition of advanced language skills in at least one of the following five languages (English, French, Spanish, German, Russian) along with in-depth knowledge of the historical, linguistic and socio-cultural context in which they are located. The training activities are divided into two years, in which the courses aimed at the acquisition of language skills alternate with courses of literature, translation studies, theoretical and applied linguistics, linguistics of specialised languages, specialized terminology, history of cultures and civilizations, mass media communication, aimed at achieving the educational objectives of the LM-37 with reference to its employment opportunities. The expected learning outcomes will be achieved through a planned and regulated articulation of teaching, which will make use of frontal lectures, thematic seminars, cycles of lessons held by experts from different sectors, annual guided and/or self-study language exercises, in the classroom and in multimedia laboratories, individual practical work. A graduate degree is a prerequisite for continuing studies in second-level university specialising master's, specialisation courses and doctoral research.
