Degree qualifying for the practice of the profession of physician-surgeon

The programme in a nutshell

Scientific training that puts the patient first

The specific mission of the integrated five-year/six-year degree programme in Medicine and Surgery is the training of a doctor who possesses a multidisciplinary and integrated vision of the most common problems of health and disease, with an education oriented to the community and the territory, to the prevention of disease and to the promotion of health, endowed with a solid humanistic culture in its implications of medical interest.
The programme, which lasts several years, is directly qualifying for the practice of the profession of physician-surgeon.

Teaching methodology

For the delivery of frontal courses, the traditional approach, distinctly oriented towards problem-based learning, is gradually giving way to more interactive teaching.
The programme also makes use of innovative teaching methodologies for workshop activities, including simulation activities in a virtual environment on online platforms.
The professional activities and training internships, which take place in the departments and services of the Policlinico A. Gemelli, are organized in a "professional career" which, starting from the fourth year of the programme, allows students to acquire multiple skills in the medical area and in the surgical area and the transition from teaching in small groups to the "rotation by skills" of students.

And then? A technically and humanly trained doctor

After graduation, which directly qualifies them to practice the profession of physician-surgeon, graduates will be able to access the Schools of Specialization in Medicine or specific training programmes in General Medicine.

Presentation

The programme is divided into six years, within which, in addition to the study of the fundamental subjects for the practice of the medical profession, there are various training activities and contact with the departments of the Policlinico A. Gemelli  and the maturation of specific professional skills.

The programme allows students to develop aptitude for contact with others (communications skills), self-learning and evaluation skills (continuing education), ability to solve problems related to medical practice (evidence based medicine), openness to constant updating of knowledge (continuing professional development) and interdisciplinary work (interprofessional education). Space is also given to the study of information technologies indispensable in clinical practice.

Opportunities
The Faculty of Medicine and Surgery provides modern technical and scientific equipment, but above all it allows you to benefit from the close connection with the Policlinico A. Gemelli, a university hospital with over 1500 beds between admissions and day hospitals, capable of performing tens of thousands of services in the emergency room every year and more than 9 million total services and outpatient clinics: those who enrol at Università Cattolica thus have the unique opportunity not only to study medicine, but to 'live' it.
In addition to the more classic frontal teaching - with professors of recognized international scientific level - there are internship activities, in-depth studies (conferences, seminars, ad hoc projects), computer and multimedia sessions, as well as specialized workshops.
